Purple Needs Crew
Putting on a show isn't all about the actors on stage. There are lots of
roles behind the scenes that are just as important and vital for the show
to be a success. As a company Purple relies upon lots of people working
very hard in a wide variety of roles behind the scenes to make our shows
work, and we are always looking for new members interested in these areas.
It's a great way of getting some experience in the area, or bringing skills
into a new area, or just a way of meeting new people!
Each show will have a dedicated crew and production team, and we do appeal
with our auditions, but we realise that people become interested in the
theatre at times when we are mid show or between shows, so we are always
welcoming to new members and volunteers.
So if you are interested in joining a group of young fun theatrical types,
but don't fancy prancing about in costume, then some of these roles might
be perfect for you!
Below is a description of some of the roles available in Purple
productions, we do tend to run things a bit differently to how some other
companies do it, so give them a quick read and see if any of them interest
you.
Technical Director
The member of the management team responsible for appointing and supporting
the stage management and sorting out the storage and condition of props,
costumes, flats, scenery etc. They can and often do perform many of the
other roles combined with this.
Stage Manager
The stage manager in Purple is responsible for working with Directors and
Production Team to get the show onto stage. They oversee the set design and
build, as well as the get in, props, lighting, and getting the crew
together for the show. Good people and time management and a good
understanding of the backstage requirements for a show are vital.
Assistant Stage Manager
The ASM is responsible for helping the stage manager, as well as liaising
with the cast during rehearsals to check that the props, set and scene
changes planned gel with those being practised. The ASM also learns the
show and so is responsible for "running the book" on show nights, where
they tell the crew, lights, sound when to perform their tasks as the show
progresses.
Set Design
Responsible for designing the look and feel of the set, working with the
Directors and SM, often can be combined with another role.
Lighting Designer
Responsible for designing and usually rigging the lights for the show, to
get the effects needed and lighting the appropriate areas in each scene,
will also programme the lighting desk to allow an operator to use the
effects correctly. Works closely with the Director and will often attend a
few rehearsals to get the feel of what the show requires.
Lighting Operator
On the show nights runs the lighting desk, needs to understand the lighting
rig and follow instructions from the ASM. Good way to get experience.
Follow Spot Operators
Follow Spot Operators sit at the back of the Auditorium and operate the
"Follow Spots" (commonly called Spotlights) that may be needed in the show.
A tolerance for heat definitely required.
Sound
Being responsible for sounds can cover a multitude of roles, from
attaching, operating and balancing radio mikes, to recording or finding
effects, and making sure they all happen at the right time during the show.
Props
Being responsible for finding, begging, borrowing, making or stealing all
the items required on stage by the actors, and keeping track of them during
the show. Also responsible for trying not to poison the cast with various
drinks and food.
Costume
Much like props, but responsible for the clothes on the cast, and their
appearance.
Costume
The show often requires set and scene changes, and these will be carried
out by stagehands who move the set and props on and off stage. A very good
way of getting experience of backstage.
Other Production Roles
Directors and Assistant Directors
These are usually picked from the membership following appeals for those
interested. We don't look to recruit directors from outside the company
directly, but if you are interested in directing, let us know, join and get
an idea about the company, and then apply from inside once you get to know
us!
Production Managers and Production Assistants
Are responsible for co-ordinating the show's efforts and legal niceties
like contracts and budgets. Requires excellent organisational skills.
Publicity
If no-one knows about the show, then no-one can come to it! It's a job that
requires fun ideas, energy and creativity to get the name of the show out
and about. Also responsible for selling advertising space in the programme.
Lots of other roles:
Setbuilding
We generally try and get lots of people to pitch in with our setbuilding in
the buildup to the shows, don't worry if you've never done anything like it
before, people are always useful to wield a brush!
Get In and Out
Get in is a big day when the set, costumes and props arrive in the theatre
and get set up. The lighting will also be rigged and programmed ready for
the show. It's a long day, and help is always appreciated. Get out is after
the show closes, and the reverse applies, as we pull everything out of the
theatre and return it to storage the next day.
Programme and advert design, Socials, and many others
A theatrical
production is a reflection of life. All skills and talents are useful. If
you have something you can do, or anything to offer, even if it's just
time, or you'd like to learn more skills or gain experience, then get in
touch with us and get involved with the show!"
